Every year, as the days grow shorter and the mist rolls in, October marks our special writing month at Donkey Books. The spirit of Halloween and autumn inspires us every year, and it’s the perfect time for our Ghostly Scribbles writing challenge.

This is where it all begins. This page serves as the central hub for the challenge, year after year. We are constantly looking for the most compelling and spine-chilling ghost stories to publish in our annual collection. Whether you’re a seasoned storyteller or just starting out, we invite you to pick up your pen and submit your most creative, eerie work.

What are the rules?

The rules are very simple:

Each day, you will be given a prompt. Using that prompt, you will write a short story, poem, or other preferred form. The story is supposed to be no longer than a thousand words!

How do I send in a story?

Can I send in multiple stories?

Yes!

You can send in as many stories as you would like, but no chosen author will be published more than once in the same bundle.

Can I enter again if my story was chosen in a previous year?

Yes!

We love to welcome back familiar faces! Having been published in a previous bundle does not put you out of the competition now.

What happend when my story is chosen to be in the bundle?

If your story is chosen to be in the bundle, you will recieve and email with well-deserved congratulations!

We, here at Donkey Books, will work hard to make sure the book is ready to be published, so you don’t have to do a thing! Once the book is ready, we will be in touch so we can send you your own copy as a little gift from us!

How to participate

Participating in the Ghostly Scribbles writing challenge is easy. The rules are:

For security reasons, sign-up is required. You can sign up for free and you can sign-out at any time.
Read the terms of agreement.
Use the form below to send your submission. Make sure you are logged-in.
The submission deadline is October 31st at 23:59 (CET/CEST).

At the end of September, the prompts will be announced.
