Looking Back: A Successful Afternoon in Heemskerk

On Friday, March 13th, Donkey Books traveled to the Heemskerk Library for a special lecture on the social status of women in 18th-century Amsterdam.

We took a deep dive into the tragic fate of Aaltje Beeker, viewed through the eyes of her contemporary, Dorothea Robberts. The room was filled with engaged listeners, leading to a wonderful exchange of ideas and insightful questions. Why did society let Aaltje down, and why does her cry—"Toch is het mijn!"—still resonate so strongly in 2026?
